These articles I found at Cubed3
Quick News - Nintendo President, Satoru Iwata has stated that in addition to looking to other manufacturers for extra LCD screens to prevent any shortages, the price of the Nintendo DS is to be in the same range as the GBA: SP - which is amazing considering the latest news on the PSP's pricing!
Stay tuned for even more updates...
Cubed³ recently reported that the DS was to be priced somewhere in the region of $199 or lower, whereas the Sony is supposedly aiming at the $250+ bracket with its PSP. However, CNN Money's 'Game Over' column has new news regarding what the actual price for the PSP could be.
Certain Industry analysts believe the new 'wonder' portable could début at around the $500 mark! In addition to this claim, the article points out how Sony is playing too many cards close to its figurative chest. Atari CEO Bruno Bonnell had this to say on the issue,
"What about the breakable aspects of it? If it breaks, can you bring it back and get another one for free? What about the movie strategy? The wireless strategy? The MP3 downloading? We don't know. What about the connectivity issues? We don't know. What about the video output? We don't know."
Whilst true, the same could well be said about Nintendo, although the Kyoto Company has apparently revealed just enough to keep many pundits satisfied for the time being. Bonnell reiterates that Sony is scared to release too many facts now since it would give away the planned high pricepoint, "$500 to start would be my guess." This contrasts starkly to EA CEO Larry Probst's recent comments that placed the PSP between $199 and $249.
Whereas many Nintendo fans would love the $500 mark to be true, it would be more sensible to expect Sony to try its hardest to bring that price down to something like $300 - a happy medium, but still too high to be honest.
Keep it locked to C3 for further news on the DS and PSP situation...
Backe to me:
I couldn't believe my EYES! The DS $100-$150, psp $400-$500!
EDIT: All this recent news coming in has blown me away. But despite the fact that Nintendo said they were making the DS a completely new family of handhelds, I think that they have decided to actually make the DS the next in the game boy line. Here is why:
The News that made me think this: It was announced that nintendo has filed patents for all these names. DGB EGB GBD GBE GBN GBY TGB WGB XGB I doubt that they would file a patent for a new game boy that is going to be developed in a year or so. So these names might actually be DS initials.
Another piece of news: Nintendo President, Satoru Iwata has stated that in addition to looking to other manufacturers for extra LCD screens to prevent any shortages, the price of the Nintendo DS is to be in the same range as the GBA: SP - which is amazing considering the latest news on the PSP's pricing! If true, this means that the DS's price will be around the same amount as all the other Gameboys price when they came out. I think that the DS will be priced around $130 (or close to there) and the SP's price will be lowered to $75, because the DS is definitely worth a lot more then $15 more the the SP. I also think that they will stop selling the old GBAs because if they did keep selling them they would have to move the price down to $50 and I don't think they will want to do that.
Another reason why I think the DS may be the next gen game boy is because it plays GBA games, just like the GBA played GB and GB color games.
What do you guys think?

Well maybe the PSP is worth it, not that I'm on eithers side but I'm just saying. Most likely I'm gonna get the DS only because I trust Nintendo, I've had every Gameboy and loved them all but if I actually can afford to but a hand-held for freaking $400-500 then maybe.

Sony are really confusing me with their approach to the PSP. In the past few days/weeks we've heard a lot about the low battery life for the PSP, which has been confirmed. This has already subtracted from it being a truly portable system. And as we know the pricing will be far higher than competition. As things stand I really see far more people being drawn to the innovative and far more economical DS, rather than the pricy and short battery lifed PSP. Even with Sony's already extensive userbase I don't see all that many people being ready to fork out that kinda cash for the PSP.

WOW! $500! I can't afford that much for a handheld... I could buy a cheap Dell with that much... How do they expect to compete with other models that are a fraction of its price?

I emailed C3 regarding their news asking where it came from, they responded very quickly:
"The Nintendo Conference that was held recently has been covered by C3 in-depth (things like new controller for Mario Party 6, codename Revolution confirmed, hooking Revolution up to TVs and PC monitors, etc).
However there were two things not mentioned for some reason - so I posted both separately - the Bandai shares story and the DS being priced in the same range as the GBA.
All from Iwata-san's mouth."
So it is not a rumor, it is fact that Iwata-san's said that it would be priced in the same range as the gba. We don't know exactly how much that is going to be but it should be somwhere between $100 and $150. So this is great news!

It's all speculation at this moment in time. The conference revealed no actual pricing margins, and simply confirmed that Nintendo are attempting to make the price as affordable as possible.

The actual price is indeed speculation, but Iwata-san said that it would be priced in the same range as the SP, which is a lot lower then we previously thought.

Yes, the PSP is aimed towards the adults. But I dont think that after they see the specs that they will buy it. Hell, would you buy a $400-500 doller system that is only portable 2-3 hours of the day?
On another note; I wonder if the PSP will become a little hot after sucking up all that juice?

More and more reasons not to buy a PSP...
$500 is outrageous. Not even a console system to date has cost that much. And with the battery problem, Sony had better get their act together quickly or they could end up blown by the wayside by the DS.

joy fills my heart.... only my PSP fanboy friends will undoubtedly scream and yell "LIES, LIES!, PSP iS t3h U-b3r!!!!", and speculation or not, i believe that it will still be in that range (the DS) and i would not be ashamed to ask my parents to pay the extra 30 to 50 dollars for it :)

Did you ever think that maybe the reason it's that expensive is because they can't lower it? There is a lot of technology packed into that little space, after all.
