Famitsu asked the following questions to 76 game developers and 273 random other industry-related people. Survey says...

QUOTE
ROUND 1: Which do you think will sell better?
PSP = 102, DS = 137, SPLIT = 111

ROUND 2: Which will be cheaper?
PSP = 31, DS = 274, SPLIT = 38

ROUND 3: Which will be released first?
PSP = 98, DS = 152, SPLIT = 101

ROUND 4: Which will have more interesting software?
PSP = 66, DS = 172, SPLIT = 111

ROUND 5: Which design to you like better?
PSP = 251, DS = 42, SPLIT = 58

ROUND 6: Which one do you want to carry with you normally?
PSP = 134, DS = 69, SPLIT = 147

ROUND 7: Which one do you want to play while on the train?
PSP = 140, DS = 91, SPLIT = 119

ROUND 8: Which one makes a better present?
PSP = 104, DS = 89, SPLIT = 154

ROUND 9: Which one has more appealing functionality?
PSP = 113, DS = 149, SPLIT = 88

ROUND 10: Which will feature more fresh, new software?
PSP = 31, DS = 244, SPLIT = 74

ROUND 11: Which one is easier to develop for?
PSP = 114, DS = 98, SPLIT = 134

ROUND 12: Which do you want to be left standing in the end?
PSP = 84, DS = 156, SPLIT = 112

The NDS wins seven of the questions and a grand total of 1629 votes, compared to PSP's five wins and 1269 total.

It's certainly interesting to see which questions went to which platform. Clearly the industry sees the NDS as something that everyone knows, expects and wants to innovate, while the PSP seems to win in the categories related to garden-variety gaming.

I'm looking forward to the PSP more, there just aren't any games that look good to me on DS.

Let me ask you this question, Matt (there's a lot of Matts on this site):

What made the classic games so great? Did you play Zelda, Mario or Metroid because they had great graphics? No, the reason why so many of us enjoyed them was that they were all unique at the time. Nowadays, games are becoming more and more similar to each other and unique games are few and far between. The PSP is merely a continuation of this trend. The Nintendo DS, however, is an attempt by Nintendo to change the industry. Games released on the PSP will mainly be the same old games with bumped-up graphics, with hardly any unique games because they've all been done before. On the Nintendo DS, entirely new and unique games will be possible. And, as pointed out by Nintendo, the Nintendo DS can handle any games which the PSP can, but the inverse is not true.

So, will you get a stale system playing host to stale old games and gaming concepts, or a new system which will allow developers to create entirely new games, and even entirely new genres? I know where my cash will be going.

I see what you're saying but... I don't really like Mario 64 or Metroid Prime, or Mario Kart or Animal Crossing, or any of the other games announced for DS. Excuse me for the cliche, but they all look very kiddy. Usually, I wouldn't use such a horrible generalization, but it really is true, and they just don't look like games that I would be interested in playing. PSP just looks like it has many more games that suit my taste, for example: I could have a much better looking (IMO) FPS from Konami than Metroid Prime. Plus, the ability to watch movies and the other extras on the PSP look great, I think.

I guess it really comes down to personal taste - if you're content with the state of gaming today, get a PSP. But if you understand Nintendo's reasoning behind needing to change the state of the industry, get a DS. I'm a developer myself as some of you may or may not know, so I can see it from Nintendo's point of view. Nowadays, the hardest part in the game creation process is designing the game. The coding is relatively easy compared to actually thinking up what the game is going to be. That's why I'm getting a DS. I can immediately see potential in Ninty's little machine.

To me the DS is far more appealing due to the fact that each new game for the DS will be a completely new gaming experience.

Looking at those questions, the PSP seems to fare better on the more important questions, such as development issues and playability. Apart from the final question the DS only tends to win the votes on originality, with the PSP being far more appealing as a console by the looks of things.

The PSP doesn't really seem to win in the playability questions. The only things that seem to suggest playability are round 4 and 10, and possibly round 9, all of which the DS has the vast majority of the votes. And it's obvious that the DS will be harder to program for, considering they need to get to grips with the two screens and the touch screen.

just curious, but if you don't seem too interested in the games of DS, what's keeping you here? (just a question, don't flame :ph34r: !)

I didn't say that EVERY SINGLE game coming out for DS looked kiddy, but if you look at a list of announced games, it really is the only one that isn't.

Well, I came here before, when it was GBA Central, and I just signed up again when they moved the forums. I still might like the DS later on, but right now, it's just not looking that great to me. So I guess we'll see.

Yet your exact words were the following:

You explicitly call Metroid Prime "kiddy". Don't try and backpedal now.

As for Metroid being the only non-"kiddy" game, well no. You haven't looked at the list of announced titles, clearly.

Yes, I have.

Animal Crossing DS
Balloon Trip DS
Bomberman DS
Carving
Cerulean Dreams
Dark Reflections
Dragon Ball Z
Dragon Quest Monsters
Dynasty Warriors
Egg Monster Heroes
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
Frogger 2005
Gyakutan Saiban
Mario Kart DS
Mario's Face
Mega Man Battle Network DS
Metroid Prime: Hunters
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed
Monster Rancher
Mr. Driller
Need for Speed
New Super Mario Bros.
One Piece
Pac 'n Roll
Pac Pix
PictoChat
Pikachu Demo
Project Rub
Rayman
Sonic DS
Sonic E3 Demo
Special Effects Demo
Spider-Man 2
Spongebob Squarepants
Submarine Demo
Super Mario 64 x4
Table Hockey
Team Ninja DS project [working title]
Ultimate Brain/Card Games
Viewtiful Joe
Wario Ware DS
Yu-Gi-Oh: Nightmare Troubadour

As I said, I hate using that word and generalization, but it's true. The only other ones that don't look 'kiddy' are Need for Speed and Spider Man 2. And as far as FPSes go, Metroid Prime isn't exactly Soldier of Fortune.

And besides, I already said THE GAMES FOR DS JUST DON'T LOOK LIKE ONES I'D BE INTERESTED IN PLAYING.

Jeez, the things people jump on... why do you care so much about my opinion and what I play?

the psp youses a laser to read the games. wich means that win you git mad and throw it acraws the room your going to brak it. plus you cant play it in the car becaus it will scip. now the DVD thing if you started waching lord of the rings the batary will go dead. and I dont like the idea of playing a game i have beat befor

the ds is beter becaus it has games that are multiplayer and you do not nead a link cable to play thim! the wireles multiplayer is the second best thing of the DS. the best thing is the touch skrean becaus you wont nead to press start to look at the map or chang your wepon.plus you can fit it into your pokit. you cant do that with a sistom that plays DVD`s.

THE DS IS WAY BETER THAN THE psp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow. I would take that alot more seriously if there weren't so many spelling / grammar problems, and if you actually knew what you were talking about.

1: OK, I'll remember that next time I throw a game system across the room when I get mad. Seriously, who does that? I'm sure the DS would break if you threw it across the room, too. I think someone should perform this VERY important test sometime.

2: Sony already established a policy of not having ports, and if they do, there won't be very many. I think that's what you were getting at with your "and I dont like the idea of playing a game i have beat befor" comment.

3: PSP has wireless multiplayer too. Where did you ever get the idea that it uses link cables? Your own mind?

4: DS is bigger than PSP. It doesn't play DVDs in the normal size, it plays DVDs in UMD format.

Summary: Learn a little more before you come into an argument. I've already had people trying to force the DS on me on other websites, and I'm really getting tired of having it shoved down my throat. You play what you want, and I'll play what I want.

Ummm....Matt are you sure about the DS being bigger? And when my "friend" threw my GBA across the room it remained intact . Also Atari was worried about what would happen if you DROPPED the PSP. DROPPED, not threw, if it's that breakable AND incredibly expensive plus the awful battery life[Sony said it was meant for home gaming]; why not buy a PS2 instead? It would be a lot cheeper. Just think about that. But really, I'm not bashing you, you're a good guy.

Unless Sony want to commit comercial suicide, they will have a pretty sufficient anti-shock system on the PSP, meaning that it likely won't jump when playing in the car.

Who cares about anti-shock if you get two to three hours of gaming? That is not portable. It's more like "Lets rip people off by making them think that this is different than the PS2."
